The current hub network problem has received particular attention in terms of models and methods. However, current hub models do not meet important requirements for an optimal network design. These requirements include incorporation of flow economies of scale, infrastructure types, and cost allocation. The objective of this research is to investigate and characterize hub and point-to-point networks. This goad is achieved by [1] developing a model that designs an optimal hub network and an optimal point-to-point network with right-sized infrastructure, [2] allocating the network costs of hub networks and point-to-point networks to users (passengers), and [3] comparing cost allocations between hub networks and point-to-point networks.
