Public Health Psychology Social Psychology Bystander Intent Sexual Minority LGB Bystander Barriers Sexual Assault Sexual Assault is a problem on college campuses, particularly for gay and bisexual men and bisexual women. One way to prevent sexual assault is for bystanders to intervene. However, current bystander programs have been criticized for being heteronormative and excluding situations involving same-gender sexual assault (e.g., sexual assault involving a male perpetrator and a male victim). Prior to developing more inclusive programming, bystander intervention researchers must examine the unique barriers and predictors (e.g., attitudes) that impact bystander intervention in situations that involve same-gender individuals, as well as sexual minority bystanders, as basic research in this area is lacking. A sample of 226 college students was used to investigate, (1) differences in bystander intent and barriers between a high-risk sexual assault situation with a male perpetrator and male or female victim, (2) differences in bystander intent and barriers between sexual minority and heterosexual bystanders, and (3) homonegativity as a predictor of bystander intent and barriers in a high-risk sexual assault risk situation with a male victim. Results indicated that bystanders perceived less risk when the victim was male, sexual minorities take more responsibility to intervene, and homonegativity is negatively related to bystander barriers in a situation involving a male victim. Gender of the victim and sexual orientation of the bystander were unrelated to overall intent to help, perceived risk to the bystander, or skills deficits. The current study provides information that may inform bystander prevention programs to make them more responsive to the needs of sexual minority victims, and application to programs are discussed. 2020-09-28 English text Ohio University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1556804384425788 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1556804384425788 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
