Made up of six amateur migrant musicians, NWAT is a labor NGO housed in Beijing, China, and established with the aim of speaking for Chinese migrant peasant workers, calling out with their songs, and defending workers’ rights through arts. Since its inception in 2002, the troupe has published eleven albums consisting of more than one hundred original songs. I term their music grounded labor music as it is created by and for migrant peasant workers to advocate for a migrant labor aesthetics. In exchanging their grounded labor music, both performers and audiences participate in a musicking process in which the troupe seeks to embody migrant workers’ lived experiences, arouse class awareness, forge a “new worker” subjectivity and identity, promote social solidarity with and among audiences, as well as advocate for social transformation. My dissertation research serves to unfold the rhetoric of NWAT’s public deliberation of migrant labor aesthetics by examining the intertextual discourses of their musical production, the discursive and sonic representations of their songs, and the interactions with audiences during the performances bounded by various spatial-temporal synchronizations. I envision migrant labor aesthetics as a vernacular, authentic, aesthetic, collective, dialogic rhetoric that entails both symbolic and material possibilities for transforming migrant labor politics in China. 2018-10-01 English text Ohio University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1528159964123828 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1528159964123828 restricted--full text unavailable until 2023-09-01 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
