American Studies Gender Hispanic Americans Latin American History Social Structure Womens Studies environment women US-Mexico Border Latin America la frontera feminism activism Environmental contamination on the US-Mexico border has led many inhabitants of the borderlands to pursue environmental advocacy through participation in environmental organizations. Research has shown that the majority of environmental activists around the world, and specifically in the United States and Latin America, are women. This thesis investigates how women working within environmental organizations in San Diego, California and Baja California, Mexico define themselves and their environmental advocacy. Through their words and actions, I show that many of these women are empowered or "strong" women, challenging gender norms both within and outside of their participation in environmental advocacy and I investigate how these women have (or have not) changed as a result of their participation in such groups. Through these analyses, I explore whether environmental organizations are leading to women's empowerment or fulfilling unintended feminist goals. 2010-07-30 English text Ohio University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1274723786 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1274723786 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
