Trace amounts of aqueous O2 can cause a significant increase in corrosion rates normally due to dissolved CO2. To understand this effect, measurements were conducted under aqueous CO2 saturated conditions with contaminant being O2, with concentrations ranging from 10 ppb to 3 ppm. The role of oxygen (O2) in CO2 corrosion was investigated using linear polarization resistance (LPR), potentiodynamic sweeps, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and infinite focus microscopy (IFM)techniques. It has been shown that galvanic corrosion will occur between mild steel exposed to pure CO2 and mild steel exposed to a mixture of CO2 and O2.
