The work done in this thesis demonstrates the techniques used to facilitate this by estimating the failure rates of large electronic systems using Mil-Hdbk-217E methodologies. An original, automated software system is also developed from inception, that provides designers the ability to calculate the estimated reliability of competing designs in real time. Beginning with life-cycle cost analysis, a methodology that includes the assimilation of advantageous aspects of both qualitative and quantitative methods to achieve reliable designs was examined. In the second phase of the thesis, modern techniques such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) were employed to break down a set of complex electronic designs into constituent parts. Rigorous Mil-Hdbk-217E methodologies were then applied to analyze and compute the reliability of several hundreds of these constituent components.
