Wavelet Packet Modulation employs customizable wavelet packet basis functions from an arbitrary pruning of a dyadic filter bank as novel pulse shapes upon which independent QAM data at lower rates are placed; in fact, QAM is one of many special cases of this general scheme. The advantages include dimensionality in both time and frequency for flexible channel exploitation and an efficient and practical transceiver implementation with all-digital filter banks. The filter bank implementation also allows for adaptation and a method for optimizing the supersymbol for channels corrupted by tones and impulses is introduced. Supersymbol tuning, which isolates these common noise sources to a fraction of the supersymbol, allows much of the transmitted data to pass without interference.
