Handsheets were made from softwood and hardwood long fiber fractions, where one fiber type was treated separately with starch, and compared with both non-treated handsheets and handsheets made by combining the fiber fractions of both types and then treating this blend with starch. The following paper properties were measured: the entire stress-strain curve, tear index, Scott Bond, zero-span tensile, and opacity. It was concluded that there was not much difference in the properties among the three types of starch treatments. There was no discernable benefit in treating the long fiber fractions separately. Poor formation in the softwood pretreated samples may have eliminated any potential benefit in treating just the softwood long fiber fraction with starch. 2005-04-25 English text Miami University Honors Theses / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=muhonors1114188942 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=muhonors1114188942 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
