Unfortunately, students with disabilities are often faced with teachers who do not have positive attitudes about them or about having them included in their classrooms, leaving them feeling disconnected and discouraged. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether reading a first-person narrative and engaging in a discussion guided by critical literacy questions could increase the positive feelings of pre-service teachers toward students with disabilities and inclusion. Surveys were used to evaluate changes in attitudes and compare the attitudes of pre-service teachers engaged in the study activities to a control group. Although pre-service educators' sentiments towards people with disabilities were not found to be enhanced through reading and critical literacy-based book study, their attitudes towards the inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom were improved. Interpretations, limitations and implications of these findings are highlighted. 2020-07-16 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1594719874195461 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1594719874195461 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
