While the environmental themes in the stories included in the collection are certainly upfront, the stories move past mere environmental criticism or ecofabulism into more human questions of power and powerlessness, of transformation and mutation of body, mind, and soul, including stories wherein babies are born with wings, mothers choose to become tortoises rather than live as human beings, women breathe in tangible objects, and pumpjacks sing. Set in the midst of what climate scientists call the sixth great extinction—which is to say, our present moment—the stories wrestle with the ways we seek to take power through acts of destruction, and sometimes acts of self-destruction.
