In this study, the second marginal pectoral fin ray was used to age 145 juvenile Gulf Sturgeon, and these ages were validated using oxytetracycline and mark-recapture of known-age fish. Aging by fin ray is time-consuming and expensive, so the use of length-frequency analysis was also examined as a potential aging method. The length-frequency analysis was 83% accurate when assigning ages. The likelihood of age misclassification increases as sturgeon become older and longer, so cohort abundance estimations for both the length- frequency assigned age and the fin ray-determined age were calculated to identify the impact of misclassification. In cohorts with high rates of misclassification, the abundance estimates using the length-frequency age assignments were higher than those using fin-ray determined ages. Scientists working with Gulf Sturgeon should sample fin-rays to age juvenile sturgeon at least every three years and use length-frequency analysis to assign ages between years. Managers should also standardize the use of the second marginal pectoral fin ray as an aging structure for juvenile Gulf Sturgeon. 2018-05-25 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1527187111928485 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1527187111928485 restricted--full text unavailable until 2023-05-25 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
