In this study, I draw on critical race narrative inquiry to examine the narratives of Black men who are college graduates of a Predominately White Institution (PWI), which is an institution of higher learning “in which Whites account for 50% or greater of the student enrollment” (Brown & Dancy, 2010, p. 524). Specifically, the narratives of ten Black men who are college graduates are explored to better understand their experiences with and navigation of microaggressions as undergraduate students at PWIs. It is important to not only acknowledge the experiences of Black men at PWIs, but also to understand the strategies Black men use to navigate experiences like microaggression encounters. In this study, access to the narratives of Black men at PWIs was established by combining critical race theory’s counter-storytelling with narrative inquiry to form critical race narrative inquiry. Narrative inquiry employs a philosophical position that suggests narratives are filled with social ideologies and power while constructing a portrait of life experiences for the researcher (Andrews, Squire, & Tamboukou, 2013; Riessman, 1993), whereas CRT allows space for the marginalized to communicate their experiences and name their own reality (Ladson-Billings 1998; Yosso, 2006). By using critical race narrative inquiry, participants’ stories were examined through a lens that mirrored their life experiences (adapted from narrative inquiry), while providing readers access to their realities from their culturally specific perspectives (adapted from CRT) (Andrews et al., 2013; Connelly & Clandinin, 2006; Herman & Vervaeck, 2005; Ladson-Billings 1998; Riessman, 1993; Yosso, 2006). Therefore, this study offered a detailed description of the experiences participants faced in college and provided their account of strategies used to navigate their experiences. 2017-12-01 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1512052759139359 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1512052759139359 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
