Psychology controlling parenting overcontrol parental affect parental emotion parental anxiety parenting goals construal Maternal anxiety predicts controlling parenting behaviors, but the processes andconditions that explain this association remain unclear. The first aim of this study testedserial mediation models in which maternal situational negative affect and short-termparenting goals sequentially mediate the relation between maternal anxiety proneness andcontrolling parenting behaviors. For the individual paths of the mediation models, thefirst aim tested the hypothesis that maternal anxiety proneness relates to maternalsituational negative affect; maternal situational negative affect relates positively toparent-centered (PC) and inversely to relationship-centered (RC) short-term parentinggoals; and short-term parenting goals predict controlling parenting behaviors, such thatPC goals relate positively and RC goals relate negatively to parental overcontrol. Thesecond aim of this study tested a moderation model in which long-term socializationgoals and construal level of parenting behaviors moderated the relation between maternalsituational negative affect and short-term parenting goals. Specifically, the second aimtested the hypothesis that higher-level construal of parenting behaviors and self developmentsocialization goals would independently weaken the positive relationbetween maternal situational negative affect and PC goals, and weaken the inverserelation between maternal situational negative affect and RC goals. For long-termcollectivism and filial piety goals, however, higher goal levels were expected tostrengthen the relation between maternal situational negative affect and PC goals, andstrengthen the inverse relation between maternal situational negative affect and RC goals. Results partially supported hypotheses. Consistent with hypotheses, maternal situationalnegative affect and PC goals sequentially mediated the relation between maternal anxietyproneness and two distinct of parental overcontrol, and construal of parenting behaviorsmoderated the relation between maternal situational negative affect and RC goals. Thedirection of effects, however, was inconsistent with expectations for one serial mediationmodel and two moderation models. This occurred for the mediation model in whichmaternal anxiety proneness had an indirect effect on parental overcontrol throughmaternal situational negative affect and RC goals, and it occurred for the moderationmodels in which collectivism goals and general construal moderated the relation betweenmaternal situational negative affect and RC goals. 2017 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1478530292371291 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1478530292371291 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
