In Study 1, White participants attempted to distinguish truth from lie for White and Black targets. Participants were significantly better at distinguishing lies from truths for White as compared to Black targets. Participants also used the truth response more frequently for Black than for White targets, an effect especially pronounced for participants motivated to respond without prejudice. In Study 2, Black participants were included allowing for a competitive test of the own-race advantage hypothesis against a competing majority-group advantage hypothesis. Both Black and White perceivers were better able to distinguish truths from lies for White than for Black targets, supporting the majority group advantage hypothesis. Black and White perceivers used the truth response more for Black than for White targets. This effect was moderated by different motives for White and Black participants. 2015-08-10 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1438879072 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1438879072 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
