The story evolves through a series of conversations, primarily among the three principal characters—Vic Onion (an anthropomorphic onion); his best friend, Skin Cat (a sphinx cat); and his girlfriend, Wrinkle Back (a bulldog). Each conversation, labeled as a chapter, acts as a vignette—a meditation on some topic or theme. Weaving throughout and connecting each of the vignettes is an overarching story. This is similar in construction to Kevin Smith’s "Clerks," or Jim Jarmusch’s "Coffee and Cigarettes," where physical action is kept to a minimum in favor of a series of long dialogues that, while interconnected, can almost stand on their own.The conversations themselves are semi-autobiographical and often philosophicalin nature. The investigated themes regard the phase in life between twenty-something and a “real” adult. The narrative chronicles Vic’s disintegrating relationship with Wrinkle Back; Skin Cat’s search to find a job that makes him happy; and the success of Vic Onion’s garage band (part of this hinging on how Vic decides to determine what “success” even means in this case). The nature of the graphic content is highly stylized, generating a tension between the pictures (silly) and the words (serious, and sometimes mature in subject matter). This achieves a few effects. The most immediate is that it adds humor to the work. The pictures also help balance the philosophical dialogue, preventing it from becoming too heavy handed. Most importantly though, the juxtaposition of serious and silly is thematically consistent, in that it represents the contradicting nature of young adults. 2015-01-07 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1419072621 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1419072621 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
