This Farm Bill determines what crops the government will support through providing a wide range of subsidies. For several decades, agricultural subsidies for two largest subsidized commodity crops, corn and soybeans, have negatively impacted our nation's natural environment from air to soil, water quantity and quality. Two case studies illustrate these effects - Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Mary's in the State of Ohio. Legislative policies on industrial farming are causing over production of these top two crops. Subsidies put downward pressure on prices providing correlation between high yields and supply for corn and the increase in meat production at CAFOs. Demand for corn has also increased with Federal ethanol legislation. 2013-08-16 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1375792739 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1375792739 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
