African American Studies African Studies Gender Studies Social Studies Education Sociology Theater Studies Anowa culture traditions multiculture performance storytelling ideological advancement This thesis affirms that Aidoo’s, play Anowa is an honest exploration of ideological advancement in Ghana and possibly Africa, probing Ghanaians and Africans to re-evaluate their attitude towards African culture and traditions. The first chapter explores the background of Aidoo’s central character Anowa and how her character contradicts the guiding philosophy of the Akan people of Ghana. The second chapter addresses the motivational factors as well as the challenges of a storytelling performance. It further gives an overview and in-depth description of the importance of the traditional Ghanaian storytelling process.
