Composition Rhetoric Zoomable User Interface Zooming User Interface ZUI Human-Computer Interaction HCI Rhetoric Memory Rhetorical Memory To date, most research on the Zoomable User Interface (ZUI) has focused on the technical development of multiscale environments and ZUI applications. While this research is undeniably important, we would benefit from rearticulating the interface with a broader range of discourse. This thesis therefore examines the ZUI from a critical and rhetorical perspective. Chapter 1 defines the ZUI in technical and social terms. Chapter 2 traces the historical development of the ZUI with particular attention to its articulation with both windows-based applications and with a problematic rhetoric of “naturalness.” Chapter 3 explores how contemporary design practices can be informed by ancient and medieval mnemonic practices based on the arrangement of visual space.
