Psychology Social Psychology vicarious dissonance attitude change ingroup derogation value-adherence group-related attributes social identity Group membership must be salient for vicarious dissonance to occur. Therefore, it is likely that salient group-related attributes will influence the way vicarious dissonance is resolved. The current research examined if the strategies employed to reduce vicarious dissonance differed depending on whether it was aroused from observing behaviors that were inconsistent with a definitional or an associated group attribute. Vicarious dissonance aroused from observing behaviors that were inconsistent with an associated group attribute was resolved through shifts in attitudes and the direction of these shifts was moderated by ingroup identification. Specifically, low identifying individuals shifted their attitudes in the direction of the observed counterattitudinal behavior, but high identifying individuals shifted their attitudes in the opposite direction, exhibiting increased value-adherence. No attitude shifts were observed in response to vicarious dissonance aroused from observing behaviors that were inconsistent with a definitional group attribute, suggesting that attitude change is not an effective dissonance reduction strategy in situations where belief shifts would negatively affect an individual’s group membership. Additionally, the findings suggest that individuals did not opt to reduce vicarious dissonance by derogating the inconsistent ingroup member, regardless of the type of group attribute manipulated. Implications for research examining vicarious dissonance and ingroup derogation are discussed. 2009-12-21 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1261403844 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1261403844 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
