Psychology unlabeled sexual experiences qualitative methods quilting feminist methodology
This dissertation was completed in order to contribute to the rich history of feminist psychological research and to further explore an innovative qualitative research method. Insights gained from postmodern thought helped to construct the research methodology and directed the content of the final text. Specifically, three general goals served as guides throughout the research process.

Goal 1: Gather information. Unlabeled experiences are defined as those that are not labeled by women as either rape/sexual or consensual/desired sexual experiences. Five women were interviewed regarding their own experiences. It is argued throughout this document that these experiences are better understood through the use of complex discourses rather than by dualistic labeling processes. Particularly, the Good Woman discourses are evoked in order to illustrate the complex and contradictory sexual landscape young women must navigate.

Goal 2: Present information. Participants in this project were given the chance to read a preliminary write-up of material gathered during their own interviews. This step was built into the method and their responses became part of the final document. During a follow-up interview, participants commented on the utility of the write-up in their own meaning-making process, ways in which they had used the study to facilitate conversations with their peers, and the general research method and methodology.

Goal 3: Explore the utility of Quilting as a method. The metaphor of a quilt was utilized in order to shape this project. This metaphor highlighted the multi-layered and collective aspect of research. Each participant's story was conceptualized as both separate and part of other women's stories. A prototype of a Virtual Quilt was introduced near the conclusion of this document in order to provide an example of how this research can be viewed and shared by those outside of the academic community.
2008-08-13 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1218570250 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1218570250 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
