As an interesting example of gene family evolution, the CYP2ABFGST gene cluster has been characterized in rat. Eighteen loci from six subfamilies have been identified by sequencing PCR-amplified exons or introns from BAC clones. The overall organization of the CYP2ABFGST cluster in rat is much more similar to the mouse than to the human cluster. The rat cluster is the simplest of the three, with genes from each subfamily in tandem. Specific loci from all three species have been extensively compared to sort out relationships between genes.
