DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION Zelda Appalachia EDUCATION STUDENTS Research has generally indicated that developmental education students enter college facing various obstacles that hinder their pursuit of education. Prior research also suggests that first-year students enter college with varying levels of personal resources and experiences that affect their potential for acquiring knowledge. For developmental education students from Appalachia, these obstacles and experiences may be more significant. Often, the circumstances surrounding poverty have an impact on the level of learning acquired in the college classroom and this is especially true for developmental education students from Appalachia. Through the use of a role-playing scenario, the barriers to learning will be identified and analyzed for participants.
