The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or Cyberball was used to induce achievement-related stress or socially-related stress, respectively, while participant sex was counterbalanced with the type of stress task. A pre- and post-stressor salivary cortisol sample was taken, and participants completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) post- stressor. It was hypothesized that women in the social condition and men in the achievement condition would report the highest stress and most change in cortisol levels, and that higher stress would be related to more disadvantageous decisions. There was a significant interaction of sex and condition on the number of advantageous decisions made, such that in the achievement condition, men reached higher levels of stress and made more disadvantageous decisions than women, while in the social condition, women reached higher stress levels and made more disadvantageous decisions than men. This helps explain past discrepancies in the literature, and provides a possible reason that women are more affected than men by social stressors. 2014-05-01 English text Marietta College Honors Theses / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=marhonors1398443393 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=marhonors1398443393 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
