The biocompatibility of their organic materials and their versatility in shape and form factor lead to a variety of applications, including logic circuits, neuromorphic devices, and bio-chemical sensors. The choice of channel, gate, and electrolyte material can greatly affect the performance of the transistor. The work in this thesis explores the use of ion gels as solid electrolytes in OECTs. Ion gels, consisting of an ionic liquid immobilized by an inorganic or polymer matrix, maintain a high ionic conductivity while in the solid state.
