Using this conceptualization, parental accommodation has been primarily studied in the context of anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In these contexts, a substantial body of literature has documented negative outcomes associated with parental accommodation, including parent distress, symptom severity, and treatment resistance. The current study aimed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of a new scale designed to measure parental accommodation in the context of tic disorders. To our knowledge, only one study to this point has attempted to measure accommodation in this context and did so without taking the specific experience of tic disorders into account. As such, the current examination attempted to fill this gap in the literature through the development of a new scale. Parent accommodation was defined as parents modifying routines or behaviors in order to minimize child distress associated with the global experience of tic disorders. Participants were recruited via online and clinical sampling methods and included parents of children between the ages of 7 and 17 who had previously been diagnosed with a tic disorder. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted in order to examine the factor analytic structure of the Parent Accommodation of Tics Scale (PATS). Additionally, the psychometric properties of the measure were examined separately in each sample. Results indicated an 11-item, two factor structure (KMO = .842; χ2(55) = 377.95, p < .001). In both samples, the total score of the measure demonstrated strong internal consistency and discriminant validity. The online sample also indicated strong convergent validity, while this represented a weakness in the hospital sample. Interpretations of these findings, as well as treatment implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. 2020-04-08 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1586193891957974 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1586193891957974 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
