The piece attempts to portray the struggles of the ordinary Latin American person, whose life goes by immersed in a reality that seems unlikely to change. Outrageous inequality, endemic corruption, and insufficient access to education operate as barriers that perpetuate the status quo. In despair, some people find refuge in religion, whereas others become increasingly isolated. This sense of loneliness is depicted by the importance that is given to the semitone. On the one hand, the harmonic materials include several modes and synthetic scales characterized by a semitone prominently placed between the first and second scale degrees. On the other hand, the interval of minor second plays a significant role between the tonal centers of the principal articulation points of the piece. Its various sections, meant to be played with no interruption, intersperse areas where texture and color are the dominant elements, with others extremely rhythmical. The second and final sections include the recitation of fragments of the poem.As a footnote, the inclusion of instruments such as a “quena,” a “bombo leguero,” and a “candombe piano” drum is evocative of the land to which the music is connected. The approximate duration is twenty-one minutes._______MUSIC THEORY: “The Historical Development of Consonance/Dissonance And A Model for Its Assessment” This work explores one of the most elusive subjects in music theory: the concept of consonance and dissonance. The first section studies the evolution of this concept, in definition and treatment, from the monophonic era up to Hermann von Helmholtz. The second section, concerning the century from the 1860s to the 1960s, studies the approach of scholars from areas other than music that became increasingly interested in the perception of consonance and dissonance. The third section advances ADC ("Acoustic Dissonance Calculator"), a model that measures the acoustic dissonance of chords. In conjunction with other analytical or compositional tools, ADC allows the composer to plan out a passage with more or less tension according to various parameters. Likewise, ADC enables the analyst to study, interpret, and explain why, due to their inherent tension, certain sonorities seem to stand out, whereas others are lost in the texture. In the fourth section, ADC is applied to Howard Hanson's classification of sonorities. 2020-05-05 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1583928640691947 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1583928640691947 restricted--full text unavailable until 2022-05-05 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
