This body of work is inspired by the acts of protest from women over the past ten years as part of the Green Revolution. 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the 1979 revolution that changed everything when the Shah was forced out and Mullas took control, morphing the country into an Islamic state that follows strict Sharia law . These laws have been used as a way of attempting to control all the citizens of Iran, though mainly used to suppress women’s rights. This current misogynistic regime has tormented the women of Iran for four decades and they have had enough. In Roya Hakakian’s words, “Today, ordinary Iranian women, fed up with their second-class status, are refusing to obey the laws that do not protect them.” The Green Revolution started ten years ago after yet another rigged election. I watched from my television as protesters filled the streets, excited to see my generation revolting as the Green Movement was born. I will never forget as shots were fired and Neda Agha-Soltan, a 26-year-old student, lay in a puddle of her blood on the ground grasping her chest. Neda’s death was the first spark that started a blaze of feminism raging throughout Iran. Since her tragic death, there has been a rise in female protestors, whose numbers continue to grow due to recent economic struggles and worsening conditions for all citizens of Iran. This exhibition explores the stories of the women protestors of Iran, and exists as a place of reflection and mourning for those who have given their lives in protest. 2019-05-21 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1556307287955672 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1556307287955672 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
