It was expected that there would be a difference in beverage consumption between males and females, among students living at home, in apartments, or on-campus in dorms, and among freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior class standings. An online questionnaire was completed by students enrolled in undergraduate courses at Kent State University (n=1,182) and a focus group was completed by students after completing the questionnaire (n=5). Descriptive statistics were used to described demographics and quantities of beverages consumed daily. Factorial ANOVAs were used to analyze differences between sex, class standing, and living arrangement. A p-value of 0.05 was selected for statistical significance. There were significant differences between males and females, and within class standing and living arrangement. There was no three-way interaction between sex, class standing, and living arrangement. Findings of the focus group indicated that taste and price were the most common reasons for beverage choice, followed by convenience, healthfulness, and location of consumption. This study demonstrates a need for interventions among college students to decrease consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and increase consumption of nutrient dense beverages such as milk or non-caloric beverages such as water or unsweetened coffee or tea. 2018-12-10 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1542317862606786 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1542317862606786 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
