Establishing a broader understanding of anxiety (e.g. etiology, maintaining factors, etc.) may aid in alleviating the degree of impairment and foster development of improved interventions. To this end, expanding on previous social-cognitive models of anxiety, the current dissertation proposes one potential pathway of anxiety development through which child executive functioning mediates the relationship between parenting behaviors and pediatric anxiety. This model is assessed through examination of the longitudinal reciprocal relationships between executive functioning (i.e. planning), parenting behaviors (i.e. maternal sensitivity as measured through autonomy, supportive presence and hostility) and anxiety symptoms across middle childhood (6-12 years old). A sample of 1,107 child-parent dyads participated in a multi wave study completing measures of sensitivity (i.e. a mother-child interaction task), planning (i.e. Tower of Hanoi) and anxiety symptoms (i.e. Child Behavior Checklist) when the child was in the 1st, 3rd and 5th grade. Preliminary analyses indicated that the latent maternal sensitvity measure maintained partial weak invariance – suggesting limited construct validity. At several time points, primary analyses indicated that maternal sensitivity significantly predicted planning and planning significantly predicted anxiety, however results did not support mediating or reciprocal effects. Limitations and future avenues of research are discussed. 2018-07-30 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1532625580140546 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1532625580140546 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
