Counseling Education The purpose of the study was to better understand the experiences of Caucasian counseling graduate students who had completed a course with an African American counselor educator. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was the methodology used for this study as it allowed for a detailed analysis of the experiences of the students.Ten participants were interviewed for this study in a semi-structured interview format. Participants were gathered from COUNSGRAD and CESNET email list servs. During these interviews, students were asked questions to help them reflect on and share their experiences in the classroom with African American counselor educators. Data analysis was completed using a six-step process developed by Smith, Flowers, and Larkin (2009). Four themes emerged from this process; (a) students perceived the instructor’s self-disclosure impacted the classroom experience, (b) students’ expectations and racial perceptions of African Americans influenced various aspects of the cross-racial classroom experience, (c) students perceived the student teacher relationship was influenced by the instructor’s use of interpersonal skills, and (d) students perceived there was a difference between the teaching styles of African American counselor educators and Caucasian counselor educators. 2018-08-23 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1531403979756108 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1531403979756108 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
