Participants’ lived stories were examined in three dimensions of space—backward¿forward, inward¿outward, and situated in place. Narrative inquiry yielded insights into the ways they prepared and assisted their children in navigating home and school literacy practices. Findings from this narrative study are important to reduce the ambiguity parents perceive with regard to their role in preparing their children for formal schooling. Parents, researchers, and educators often have conflicting ideas about what role parents play as first teachers as well as differing perceptions about the value placed upon that role as a result of personal histories, lived experiences, and other cultural or economic factors. 2017-08-11 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent149890872870899 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent149890872870899 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
