Sociology Education is arguably one of the most important institutions in society. It directly affects one’s life chances through job opportunity and earnings potential. Public schools are often perceived to provide equal foundations for all students, yet educational disparities persist. Using data from the Ohio Department of Education, my analyses examine how various student and school variables affect graduation rates in the 609 public school districts in Ohio. Results indicate that more segregated school districts have higher graduation rates; however, Ohio school districts are more likely to be white-segregated as over half of the districts have a Black student population of 1% or below. District median income and percent of students in poverty by district are also found to be significant to graduation rate, where lower income categories and poverty decrease the likelihood of graduating.
