Athletes are seen as strong, dedicated, aggressive, and competitive. Female athletes, however, face competing expectations because beliefs surrounding femininity are often seen as incompatible with norms associated with athleticism (Krane, Choi, Baird, Aimar & Kauer 2004). The current research examines how the athletes on a collegiate softball team handle these competing expectations, and how the expectations influence their actions and behaviors. I found the players in this study identify as both athletic and feminine simultaneously. There are instances when the players emphasize their athleticism, and occasions where they emphasize their femininity, and times when they have to navigate the tension created when “traditional” notions of femininity conflict with “traditional” notions of athleticism. These findings help blur the perceived dichotomous relationship between athleticism and femininity. 2015-07-21 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1436792073 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1436792073 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
