The application of the cholesteric eWriter display may vary from a simple sketch pad to a dedicated note taking device. Therefore, a greater understanding of this technology is needed to expand product markets and gain a deeper insight into the relevant physical processes which occur during display use. Throughout this thesis two types of displays with very different mechanical and optical properties will be characterized. The section on metrology will focus on how this unique type of display can be measured for certain characteristics such as line thickness, reflection properties, electro-optical properties and phase transition temperatures. The section on characterization and analysis of these displays will focus on how changing specific material properties affect the mechanical and optical properties. It will be shown that different morphologies of the liquid crystal and polymer present in the display will lead to different physical characteristics in the writing experience.
