While actual flooding risks for a given area may be known, a disparity between true risks and the perceptions of risks and preparedness held by residents can exist. The relationship between risk perceptions and preparedness actions remains unclear. Examining individual risk perceptions in reference to ones prior experience and the connection of such perceptions to preparedness actions may provide new insights for both policy makers and at-risk individuals. For this study a mail survey will be sent to 1000 residents of the flood-prone area of Painesville, Ohio, with an expected response rate of 10-15%. Using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program an association between the variables was investigated using cross-tabulation and a chi-square model. Statistical results assessed the respondents prior flood experience, their perceptions and beliefs about flooding, and preparedness level. 2011-04-12 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1302232048 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1302232048 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
