In 2003, the prevalence of diabetes in the veteran population was higher than that of the general population. Nearly 25% of veterans in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have been diagnosed with DM. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, end stage renal disease, and amputations in the US and in the Veterans’ Administration (VA). The mortality rate among VA patients with diabetes averages approximately five percent per year, compared with an average of 2.6% among patients without diabetes, and the majority of deaths and hospitalizations related to diabetes, both inside and outside the VA, are due to macrovascular complications such as heart attack and stroke. The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to describe variables associated with adherence to preventive-health screenings in veterans with DM who participated in the 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. Variables were defined as demographic: age, gender, ethnicity, highest level of education, level of income; perceived threat variables: retinopathy, foot sores/irritations, and diabetes education; and preventive-health screening characteristics: adherence to recommendations for vision screening, glycosylated hemoglobin (HB A1c) testing, self-foot examinations, and diabetes follow-up. The descriptive research design was implemented based on secondary data analysis of 2012 BRFSS survey data. Veterans aged 18 years and older, who responded to the 2012 survey and self-reported a current diagnosis of diabetes, constitute the sample. No veterans with diabetes who completed the survey were excluded. Descriptive statistics were used to describe and summarize the sample and study variables. Independent samples Chi-square test were used to assess relationships between the characteristics of perceived threat and preventive-health screening. Implications for theory, practice, education, policy, and research as well as recommendations for future research were explored. 2017 English text Case Western Reserve University Doctor of Nursing Practice / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=casednp1561473636964802 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=casednp1561473636964802 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
