Crook, Libby Speech Therapy childhood traumatic brain injury social participation cognitive deficits The impact of sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) on the developing brain is complex, often resulting in widespread deficits. This study investigated the association between social participation and cognitive deficits in elementary-aged students with TBI per parent report. Two Parent Proxy Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures were administered: 1) Peer Relationships; 2) Cognitive Function. Nine parents of children (ages 5-14) who experienced a TBI of any severity completed the protocol. A correlation matrix revealed a weak positive correlation indicating a trend for an association between the PROMIS measures (p= 0.18). One-sample t-tests revealed that parents reported greater peer relationship deficits compared to the average standard score for the population (p<0.05) suggesting parents have heightened concerns about the social needs of their children post-injury. These findings indicate there is a need for further research to help bring awareness to the chronic social problems children with mild TBI experience. 2021-06-21 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1619804452085036 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1619804452085036 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
