Occupational segregation is increasingly being recognized as the primary factor contributing to women’s low representation in many fields in Saudi Arabia. Women have experienced numerous difficulties as a result of limited education and employment opportunities and other obstacles related to cultural and religious factors. Rigid gender role expectations stemming from cultural and religious doctrines have had a significant impact on the opportunities availed to women to seek employment outside accepted career paths for many years. This research seeks to understand how women who successfully entered nontraditional careers have overcome the existing societal pressures associated with traditional gender role. This research utilizes a sequential mixed methods design of an exploratory and explanatory approach beginning with a qualitative study followed by a quantitative study followed by a final explanatory quantitative study. The initial qualitative phase was conducted to understand the barriers women encounter in nontraditional careers and how they have overcome these barriers. Key findings such as family support and personal characteristics such as self-efficacy informed measures for a quantitative phase to determine the main factors that influence women’s career commitment and satisfaction. The quantitative study revealed that social support is the main factor that influences women’s career commitment and satisfaction. However, women’s ideal self and their vision of the future influenced their career satisfaction, but it did not influence their career commitment. The final quantitative study was conducted to understand under what condition does the ideal self drive women’s career commitment. Findings should be of interest to public policy makers, families, educators, and organizations to retain and increase female workforce participation in nontraditional professions. 2019-08-26 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1562389892951141 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1562389892951141 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
