The methodology is compliant with American Society of Civil Engineers, International Building Code, American Iron and Steel Institute, and the American Institute of Steel Construction Inc. A user-friendly MATLAB program is created to automate the validation and optimization of steel purlin members based on the particular parameters of the canopy design and build location. A sample calculation is conducted. Results indicate that the program produces results within 20% of those of a more complete industry standard analysis.
