The vortex state is a topological defect spin configuration and is an exciting platform for many potential applications including spintronic devices, information processing, biomedical technology, and spin-qubit integrated systems. We use sensitive differential magneto-optical Kerr effect and single-spin microscopy to probe the dynamics of the vortex core allowing us to identify and characterize the pinning landscape through which it traverses. We then develop protocols for fast nanosecond time scale translation of the vortex core between neighboring stable pinning sites. With these tools developed we ultimately use the vortex core to coherently manipulate a spin qubit.
