The second objective was to explore whether relationships between psychosocial predictors and never having a mammogram varied across the three groups (moderation effects of ethnicity).Using a modified version of Andersen’s Healthcare Service Utilization Model (Andersen, 1968), effects of socio-demographic, acculturation, enabling, and need components on odds of never having a mammogram were tested. For the second objective, interaction terms for acculturation by ethnicity and enabling by ethnicity were added.Merged (2005-2007-2009-2011) California Health Interview Survey data were utilized. Unweighted sample was 3,710 Asian women ages 40 years and older (Chinese=1,389; Vietnamese=1,094; Korean=1,227). Replicate weights (total N=1,710,233; Chinese=940,000; Vietnamese=410,000; Korean=360,000) were applied for analyses.Findings for main effects indicated that Korean women were more vulnerable to never having a mammogram than Vietnamese women. Being unmarried (ref=married) or non-U.S. citizens (ref=naturalized citizens) showed higher odds of never having a mammogram. Odds of never having a mammogram were lower in middle-aged or young-old women (50–69 or 60–69; ref=70–85) and with higher number of physician visits. For the second objective, one significant interaction effect (physician visits by ethnicity) on never having a mammogram was found. For Chinese women, odds of never having a mammogram were lower as the number of physician visits got higher. For Korean and Vietnamese women, there was no significant interaction with number of physician visits. Outreach or services targeting more vulnerable women who are Korean, 40–49 or 70–85 years old, not married, or non-U.S. citizens should be developed and disseminated. Since physician visits were a protective factor for Chinese, social workers could develop education programs to facilitate physician visits and their benefits. Future research is needed to investigate cultural characteristics across the three groups that explain why Korean women were more vulnerable to never having a mammogram, as well as why physician visits were beneficial only for Chinese women. 2018-08-31 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1528399335116383 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1528399335116383 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
