Civil Engineering Engineering A building envelope (or facade) participates structurally during service and high-hazard loading. The design of the facade and its connections to structural framing requires strength and deformation standards for in-plane and out-of-plane loading. This study examines three multi-hazard ductile facade connectors (MDCs) designed for performance objectives under loading including dead load, thermal/moisture movement, wind, seismic, blast, tornado wind, and projectile impact. The MDC designs resist loading elastically, accommodate thermal/moisture or seismic drift deformations with limited force transfer, and plastically deform during low-probability hazardous loading to protect the facade or enhance the building resistance. Quasi-static experiments, which created forces or deformations to simulate loading, were conducted on the three MDCs. The experiments examined each MDC’s behavior during its respective critical hazardous loading and validated finite element models.
