There is a growing need to find and utilize environmentally friendly flame retardants. Some researchers have study the use of bio-based additives as a way to flame retard synthetic polymers. We will explore the use of tannic acid, fish gelatin, and lecithin in LDPE, HDPE, and PP. These bio-based additives will also inspire the next generation of flame retardants for PS. The thermal properties will be evaluated by the use of cone calorimetry and UL-94 test. Also, the mechanical properties were explored for LDPE. We will discuss the use of additives to have the hydrophilic/hydrophobic materials work together, the effects of crystallinity, processing temperature, and much more. 2017-06-02 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case149154227971565 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case149154227971565 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
