This construction comes out of the spatial semantics of sub as “under” through a manipulation of metaphor, directional mappings from vertical to horizontal axes, and up-down and center-periphery image schemata. Beginning with the embodied experience of the sky as “above”, projections onto topological features such a mountains allows for negative and inceptive uses of sub for pragmatic scalar construal and implicature. 2014-08-29 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1402999952 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1402999952 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
