The purpose of this study is to determine if an association exists between diabetic control, as evidenced by HgbA1c levels, and the presence and type of diastolic dysfunction (DD) in patients over the age of 65 with type 2 diabetes. Patients who had an echocardiogram showing an EF over 45% were included. The presence and severity of diastolic dysfunction, and HgbA1c levels within 3 months of the echocardiogram were recorded. Of the 654 patients evaluated with an echocardiogram, diastolic dysfunction (DD) was present in 40%; half of the patients with DD had grade I dysfunction, with only a small percentage having type III dysfunction. A logistic regression model of overall presence of diastolic dysfunction did not show a statistically significant correlation with HgbA1c; higher HgbA1c may be associated with type I DD, compared with higher grades. 2012-08-24 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1341505598 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1341505598 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
