The purpose of this descriptive cohort medical record review of pregnant patients was to examine the association between risk estimates or marker patterns and pregnancy complications. Prenatal screening and obstetric outcome data were analyzed for 120 screened-positive case subjects and 120 screened-normal controls. African American (AA) women with positive 2nd trimester trisomy 21 screens (n=95) had a statistically significant higher risk for intrauterine growth retardation (p=0.01) and low birth weight (p=0.019). AA women who experienced adverse pregnancy outcome, in particular low birth weight, had a higher inhibin-A level as compared to controls. However, aneuploidy risk estimates and marker patterns from 2nd trimester screens were not associated with increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcome. These findings provide empirical evidence for guiding pregnancy management plans for these patients. 2009-10-13 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1247627814 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1247627814 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
