However, little is known about youth attitudes toward psychiatric medications or about their subjective experiences of treatment. Gathering information about these attitudes and treatment experiences may shed light on adolescents’ low adherence to psychiatric medications.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to answer the following questions: 1) What is the factor structure, validity, and reliability of the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI) in youth undergoing psychotropic treatment? (quantitative question); 2) Will qualitative interviews with adolescents about their daily use of psychiatric medication support the dimensions found in the factor structure of the original DAI as used with adults? Will interviews with adolescents reveal new dimensions of youth attitudes toward psychiatric medication which are not measured by the DAI? (qualitative question); 3) Can measurement of youth attitudes toward psychotropic treatment be improved by knowledge about the factor structure, validity, and reliability of the DAI in youth as well as understanding their subjective experiences of treatment? (mixed methods question)

Confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and parallel analysis were used to elucidate the factor structure of the DAI in adolescents. Qualitative findings were used to delineate dimensions of adolescent medication experience not measured by the existing instrument and to assess differences in the meaning assigned to DAI concepts by adults and youth.

Results indicated that two robust factors (“positive” and “negative” feelings toward medication) were supported by all three quantitative techniques. The qualitative data supported the findings that adolescents frame their opinions of medications in positive and negative terms.Qualitative results also highlighted the presence of eight additional themes not reflected in the original DAI, including concepts such as personal autonomy, inclusion in medication decision-making, experiences of stigma, and personal responsibility vs. external control over behavior. These themes highlight that medication experiences and the formation of attitudes toward pharmacological treatment for youth are complex, rendering it difficult to represent adolescent attitudes toward medication with a single instrument.
2008-07-22 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1216162396 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1216162396 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
