The first problem studied here is the so-called ‘chevron’ structure. The layers in a ferroelectric smectic-C liquid crystal may deform to V-shaped structures called chevrons. On application of a large electric field the layers flatten and the so-called ‘bookshelf’ geometry is reached. This, however, occurs in three different ways. A model is proposed that explains these three experimentally observed chevron-bookshelf transitions. The interlayer interaction in a ferroelectric liquid crystal is the second subject investigated. These materials exhibit a series of phases in a fairly narrow temperature range. For these phases to exist, it is believed that there must be a long-range interlayer interaction between the smectic layers, but the origin of such an interaction is not yet fully understood. It is shown that the anisotropy in bending elastic constants of smectic-C liquid crystals can give rise to long-range interlayer interactions. Finally the mechanism of anchoring of a nematic liquid crystal at a polymer surface is studied by using molecular dynamics simulations. 2006-03-31 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1143821571 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1143821571 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
