Although the stories use the mode of speculative fiction, they are more interested in questions of how; than what if; How do people belong to a place? How can conservation and progress coexist? How does environment speak through its creatures? How do we respond to loss? The estrangement of these stories manifests differently for each character. Some are humans living on alien worlds. Some discover that their own bodies are alien. Characters are estranged from environment, from family, from self.
