Cytokinesis inhibition in an isogenic strain mutated at the recA locus was not observed. Preferential DNA synthesis occurred in this mutated strain accompanied by extensive DNA degradation. PDD treatment resulted also in the induction of elevated synthesis of a 38,000 MW polypeptide. No increased synthesis of this polypeptide was found in cells of recA mutants upon similar treatment. Consequently, PDD appears to induce SOS DNA repair as evidenced by its induction on recA synthesis.
